prolly need the rest of the question but I'll guess a need for more skilled labor so that slaves were not a reliable alternative to paid workers it also caused the economy of the north to turn away from agriculture and be more dependent on manufacturing -- this meant that the north was more dependent on imports and less dependent on shipping its cotton to Europe. It also caused the north to bring in more people (that were not slaves) -- also it meant that the north could build a larger better equipped army
