A long rod of uniform rectangular section and thickness t, originally straight, is bent into the form of a circular arc and the displacement d of the mid-point of a length L is measured by means of dial gauge. if d is regarded as small compared with L, show that the longitudinal surface strain e in the rod is given by e=4td/L^2. (Pls. note that e=t/2R).
