What is a variable in an experiment?

OpenStudy (matt101):

Simply put, it's pretty much anything you change to affect your result. For instance, If you're trying to see what conditions allow a tree to grow the tallest, experimental variables could include the amount of sunlight you provide, the amount of water you provide, the type of soil you use, the temperature, the humidity, etc.
