How and why do the size of a particle alter diffusion rates?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If a particle were too large to enter a cell, active transport would have to take place. That particle would not be able to enter by itself.. unless it's actively being transported into the cell. It would more than likely take longer for that particle to enter than one that is smaller.
