what is a ststement that is logically equivilant to the statement below (if today is saterday, then it is the weekend) please help me

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if today is not a weekend , then ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

If A then B implies........ if NOT B then NOT A.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

think a bit, if ive told u that today is not a weekend, then wat does that tell u ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that its not the weekend lol

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

u knw already that saturday is a weekend, so... ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

when ive told u that today is not a weekend, u should knw that today is NOT a saterday for sure eh ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah but what do i put for the answer/

OpenStudy (debbieg):

You know that IF today is Saturday, THEN it follows that today is a weekend. So if you know that today is NOT a weekend, then it must to the case that today is not _______ what?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

"If A then B" ------>implies........ "if NOT B then NOT A."

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Your A is "today is Saturday". Your B is "it is the weekend." Put it all together. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is not saterday then it is not the weekend?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Well does that make sense?? What if it's Sunday?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because you said "if NOT B then NOT A."

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Right, and what is your B? What is your A??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b= if it is not the weekend a= then it is not saterday right?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

When you say "if it is not saterday then it is not the weekend?" then you are saying: If NOT A then NOT B. That does NOT follow from: If A, then B.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is confusing me

OpenStudy (debbieg):

(if today is saterday, then it is the weekend) "If A then B" ------>implies........ "if NOT B then NOT A."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what do i put for my answer?lol

OpenStudy (debbieg):

OK, then forget about A's and B's. Just THINK IT THROUGH. If something is true, then something else MUST FOLLOW. E.g, the first thing GUARANTEES that the 2nd thing is true. So if the condition that follows from the first thing ISNT TRUE, then the condition that would guarantee it, MUST NOT BE TRUE.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is not the weekend, then it is not saterday

OpenStudy (debbieg):

If I spill red paint, there will be a puddle of red paint on the floor. So if there IS NOT a puddle of red paint on the floor, what can you conclude MUST be true?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

YES! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay! lol thanks for helping me ((;

OpenStudy (debbieg):

If I spill red paint, there will be a puddle of red paint on the floor. Therefore: if there IS NOT a puddle of red paint on the floor, then I did NOT spill red paint. :)

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Youre welcome. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can i ask you one more?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

Sorry - I was offline. In general, it's better to ask each question in a separate post. You can always tag me (or someone else) if you would specifically like to ask them to help you out (just don't go nuts with the tags, lol).
