A fisherman can row upstream at 4 mph and downstream at 6mph. He started rowing upstream until he got tired and then rowed downstream to his starting point. How far did the fisherman row in the whole trip in 7 hours?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Assume x is hours upstream and y is hours downstream: (4mi)x = (6mi)y because we know he started and stopped at the same location. We also know that x + y = 7 because that is the total time spent rowing. You need to solve that system of equations: 4x = 6y x + y = 7
