I'm assuming it is: z + 3 ---------- z^2 - 5z - 24 In which case you need to factor the bottom.

z + 3/ z^2 -5z - 24 use middle term splitting z^2 - (6-1)z - 24 open brackets and group them , z + 3 will get cancelled
