Which of the following represents this function written in standard form? y=2(x+1)(x-6) A. y=2x^2-14x+12 B. y=2x^2-10x-12 C. y=2x^2-10x+6 D. y=2x^2-5x-12

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would i multiply 2 and (x+1) first?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

You could, but I found it easier to use FOIL right away and then multiply through by 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay hold on, i'll do that right now :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2-6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 2x^2-12?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

What happened to the middle terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhhh i dont know ._. one sec!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i got 2x^2-5x-12?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Corrrect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yaaay! thank you :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aww it says that it was 2x^2-10x-12 :(

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Wait you forgot yo multiply 2 times the middle term

OpenStudy (anonymous):

daaang -_-

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Most of the "work" when using FOIL is to remember the "OI" middle terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha thank you :)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Thanks for trying to understand :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you for taking the time to explain it! :)
