OpenStudy (bruno102):

81 1/4 is equal to 2. This is the question. It is in algebra 2 and I have to say true or false, I think it is false but I am confused.

hero (hero):

\[81 + \frac{1}{4} = 2\] If you add 81 to one fourth, do you get 2?

OpenStudy (bruno102):

No. But how did you know it was adding?

hero (hero):

81 is closer to 100 than it is to two, so you can't possibly get 2 by adding one-fourth to 81.

hero (hero):

Because AND means ADD

hero (hero):

81 1/4 is read as 81 AND 1/4 It can also be written as 81 + 1/4

hero (hero):

No one probably told you that, but now you know.

hero (hero):

Keep in mind that one-fourth can also be written as .25

hero (hero):

81.25 = 81 + .25

hero (hero):

I'm just demonstrating to you why 81 + 1/4 is the same as 81 1/4

OpenStudy (bruno102):

Ok thanks so it is false!

hero (hero):

Yes, it is obviously false.

hero (hero):

\[81 + 1/4 \ne 2\]
