More, proper exposure. Immersion tends to be overkill and makes some huge assumptions about how people learn. Use of memory devices. Stories are a good example. It may be hard to remember one word. However, it is easier to remember a story and the use inside it. The story can be just one line, "Oh I wish upon a start that I could remember how to say wish!" or a paragraph. No need for something longer. Due to the way our minds work, this adds the context clues to make the entire part more memorable. Once you have a chunk of stories down, self test with flash cards to help break these into individual parts. Work on passages. It gives more context again and helps with understanding the flow and use of the language. So a paragraph off a news site is going to give you more than a vocabulary list. Memory Power 101 by W.R. Klemm is a great book to invest in. He knows his science VERY well and has looked into the best tested and proven things about memory. A nice chunk of the book deals with school applications.
