Can someone please explain to me what the comparison test for improper integrals is? Please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when the degree of numerator is greater than that of denom then it is called improper integral

Thats not what we learned... we're doing ones where the integrals are either evaluated at infinity or evaluated somewhere where there is a discontinuity. The answers are convergent if they approach a number as you take the limit or divergent if they approach infinity. The comparison test was some way to just look at an integral and compare it to a known one to determine whether its convergent or divergent without having to work through it all the way but I'm fuzzy on the specifics because my lecture ended before my professor could explain...
