MEDAL WILL BE REWARDED TO BEST ANSWER! Explain why (4,1) is not a solution to the equation y=3x+1.

OpenStudy (phi):

(4,1) is short for x=4 and y=1 if you replace x with 4 and y with 1 in your equation, is the equation true ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why would x = 4 and not 1? @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

are you asking why (4,1) means x is 4 and y is 1 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes @phi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why wouldnt it be x=1 amd y=4

OpenStudy (phi):

the same reason you call a dog a dog and not a cat.... whoever invented this (Descarte maybe) said when I write (4,1) the first number is the x, and the second number is the y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank ypu!:)

OpenStudy (phi):

y=3x+1 now replace x with 4 and y with 1 can you do that ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes I understand it now thanks

OpenStudy (phi):

now replace x with 4 and y with 1 can you do that ?

OpenStudy (phi):

you should get 1= 3*4+1 simplify the right side to 12+1 or 13 1= 13 that is not true so you know that (4,1) is not a solution
