I really need help. Angelica's service club is selling flowers for a fundraiser. Each flower costs them $0.50 to purchase. They set the sale price of each flower at the purchase price plus 40%. Write and solve an equation to determine how many flowers they will need to sell to make a profit of $500. Use complete sentences to explain what each number and variable in your equation represents. Write your solution in the context of the original problem.

OpenStudy (atlas):

What is unknown in this Question? I mean tell me what do you have to find out in the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need to figure out how to set up the equation.

OpenStudy (atlas):

I understood that...........I am asking you which quantity do you have to find in the question...........read the question and tell me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How many flowers they need to sell to make $500 @atlas

OpenStudy (atlas):

right and since you don't know this -(how many flowers to make $500) - we will assume that they sell x flowers and make $500. Are you ok with this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (atlas):

ok now read the questions assuming that they have sold x flowers and have already made $500

OpenStudy (atlas):

what is cost price of each flower?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It said above their selling it for the purchase price (0.50) Plus 40% witch equals 0.07. So I would assume 7 dollars ?

OpenStudy (atlas):

each flower costs 0.50 and they sell at 40% profit which means they sell the flower at 0.50 + (40/100) *0.50 right?? what do you get??

OpenStudy (atlas):

check your calculation ..........you did something wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did. 0.50 + 40% =0.7 Thats how it appeared on the calculator. I didn't format it the correct way though..

OpenStudy (atlas):

ok good...........so each flower sells at 0.7 and is bought at 0.5.............so how much does the service club make on 1 flower

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just got 0.9 So I'm thinking each flower sells at 0.9 and is bought at 0.5. So the service club would make 0.4 ?

OpenStudy (atlas):

each flower sells at 0.7 NOT 0.9 :P

OpenStudy (atlas):

you have to do 40% of 0.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did (40/0.5) = 80

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did I do it the correct way?

OpenStudy (atlas):

no...................40% means 40 out of 100 we write it this way 40/100 The question says that they set the sale price of each flower at 40% of buying price (0.5) So....40% of 0.5 or, (40/100) of 0.5

OpenStudy (atlas):

can you do this and tell me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.2

OpenStudy (atlas):

yup...........so how much profit does the club make on one flower

OpenStudy (lena772):

20 cents.
