How do I multiply negative exponents?

OpenStudy (ciel21):

evaluate the function given f(x)=x^2+1 and g(x)=3x+1 then f(-1) = Solution: f(x) = x? + 1 f(2) = 2? + 1 f(2) = 5 g(x) = 3x + 1 g(3) = 3*3 + 1 g(3) = 10 f(2) + g(3) = 5 + 10 = 15
