completing the square basically works off the idea that any quadratic is just a constant number off from being able to be written as a perfect square-- (x+3)^2, for example

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How I usually approach the process is I will first divide off any coefficient on the leading term, then isolate all constants to one side

\[y=-2x^2+12x-23\] \[-y/2 - (23/2) = x^2 - 6x\]
