-(4y-2)-(-3y-4)=-4
do you know how to distribute through the parenthesis ?
no
the number or sigh right before the parenthesis, in this problem it is a negative sign, you multiply everything in the parenthesis by that sign. Let me show you... -(4y - 2)....take the negative and multiply it by 4y and then by -2. You then get -4y + 2... do you understand that ?
i wrote that problem wrong... its -(4y+2)-(-3y-4)=-4
-(4y + 2) would be -4y - 2....you understand that ?
now we have : -4y - 2 -(-3y - 4) = -4 multiply everything in that parenthesis by a negative. -4y - 2 + 3y + 4 = -4 are you with me so far ?
take whatever is in front of the parenthesis and multiply it by everything in the parenthesis. That is how you distribute. So now we have : -4y - 2 + 3y + 4 = -4 combine like terms -y + 2 = -4 subtract 2 from both sides -y = -4 - 2 combine like terms -y = -6 multiply the equation by -1 to make y positive y = 6 any questions ?
so u flip the + to -?
when multiplying a negative and a negative, you get a positive.
thank u kelliegirl33
anytime :)
-4y+2+3y+4=-4 -y+6=-4 -y=-4-6 -y=-10 both the minus gets cancelled, y=10
\[-\frac{ 1 }{ 4 }(x-8)+\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }(x+2)=x+9\]
we have to distribute again to get rid of the parenthesis. Take the number before the parenthesis and multiply it by everything in the parenthesis. -1/4(x - 8) + 1/2(x + 2) = x + 9 -1/4x + 2 + 1/2x + 1 = x + 9 combine like terms -1/4x + 1/2x + 3 = x + 9 common denominator is 4 -1/4x + 2/4x + 3 = x + 9 combine like terms 1/4x + 3 = x + 9 subtract x from both sides 1/4x - x + 3 = 9 subtract 3 from both sides 1/4x - x = 9 - 3 1/4x - 4/4x = 6 - 3/4x = 6 now divide by -3/4 x = 6/(-3/4) x = 6 * - 4/3 x = - 24/3 x = -8
:-) thanks babe
no problem :)
