What sort? Most follow the 5 paragraph format: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/five_par.htm But what you write and how you tackle the topic depends on the type of essay: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/685/01/

Come up with an unbiased but simple thesis statement, then create an outline with both sides of the argument/theme. Find citable evidence to strengthen your essay. Avoid using I, me, my, etc... throughout the paper.
