What were some of the differences in the US between 1776 and 1870?
The Cold War eventually ended. Is that a legit question?
Yes.... it's for an essay. And, don't you mean the Civil?
Well both, because they are both very important historical events that are over with i guess.
There were no slaves, well at least, it wasn't legal.
Don't believe Dappy. He's not very smart. The Cold War is a "silent" war between the US and the Soviet Union, which broke down in 1991, NOT 1870.
But it had a big impact on America.
Yes it did. But that's not what he/she is asking is it?
Your right.
By 1870, America had gone through a Civil War. During that war, Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation that freed the slaves. Also, America had gone through an industrial revolution, which pretty much made life better. The focus from an almost agricultural society shifted to manufacturing goods and services. This started around 1820.
Oh and we had steam engines, which were brought out by James Watts (you know the "watts" on your light bulb). This led to the steam locomotive and the expansion of the US railway system.
In fact, you have probably heard of this before... When cattle were being brought from Texas to sell in the northeastern states as meat, it went to meat processing plants. That is where Upton Sinclair wrote "The Jungle" which led to congress to pass food regulation bills because of the nasty-unsanitary conditions.
All of this was possible because of the steam enginee.
Population in 1770 = 2,148,100 Population in 1870 = 38,558,371 The most important event was obviously the American Civil War from 1861-1865. This led to the 14th Amendment which defined a citizen as "any person born or naturalized in the US." The 13th Amendment abolished slavery, and the 15th Amendment prohibits denying the right to vote to someone because of their race. Other key events include the Louisiana Purchase, the Texas Revolution, The Spanish-American War, the War of 1812, the purchase of Alaska, the Mexican Cession, the Indian Wars, and the California Gold Rush. the right to vote was extended to all male citizens by the 15th Amendment. Women were not given the right to vote until the 19th Amendment was passed in 1920.
