what was the declaration of independence? what basic propositions did it make?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The declaration of independence was the document that the American colonies used to declare themselves free from English rule. It states that all men are created equal, all men are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights and among those rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To secure those rights, governments are instituted among men, and whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it.
