Why does water travel up paper towels faster than rubbing alcohol?

thomaster (thomaster):

I think you should post this in chemistry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did but no one answered it and I really need to know.

thomaster (thomaster):

Rubbin alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) has a molar mass of 60.10 g/mol Water has a molar mass of 18.02 g/mol That means rubbing alcohol is heavier than water. Traveling up a paper towel means traveling against the force of gravity, so I think the one that is more heavy, travels slower.

Thank you sooo much!

thomaster (thomaster):

you're welcome :)
