A really easy figure of speech in my opinion, is a simile. It's simply describing something using the words: "like" or "as". Terrestrial according to Google is something that is of or relating to the Earth. The Earth orbits around the Sun like the moon orbits around Earth. Something like that. The keyword is: "like". Connotation is simply looking at the meaning "underneath" the word. For example take the word baseball. The literal meaning of it is a sport. However, the connotation, says that it's an American tradition. It's kind of like a symbol. The symbol of a baseball, would be viable to say that it represents an American tradition.
