Can someone please help me understand oxidation?

In classical definition oxidation is the addition of an electronegative element to an another element. In the modern definition oxidation is the increase in the oxidation number. Note: Then the oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously, When any compound is oxidized the other is reduced.
