Help me factor?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[3x ^{2}+31x+36\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(Using the X method please)

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

never heard of the X method

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

the way i'd do it is 3 * 36 = 108 now find 2 factors of 108 which add up to 31

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

what do you think the 2 factors are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought it was 27 and 4 but the correct answer is \[(3x+4)(x+9)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What I don't understand is how to get that answer

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

3x^2 + 31x + 36 = 3x^2 + 27x + 4x + 36 this can be factored by grouping = 3x(x + 9) + 4(x + 9) = (3x + 4)(x + 9

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

last line should be (3x + 4)(x + 9)

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

follow that ok?

Thanks!
