I need to solve (12x^2y-y^2)/(2xy-4x^3)=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it a multiple choice question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.

It's actually a part of a larger problem. I need to find the x coordinate of each point where the tangent line is horizontal.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

its really a stright forward question, the only way it can equal zero is when the numerator is zero. so let the numerator = 0 and solve..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what I posted is the derivative set equal to zero.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

and there is a condition to the solution, which is found by letting the denominator equal zero... and its something like y cannot equal 2x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok, so I'd solve this for y then plug that back in to my original function for the x value?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

that seems to be the only way I can see to solving the problem.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

you basically have a fraction, and the only way to get it to equal zero is to have the numerator equal zero.. just my best guess

Ok, thanks for your help.
