1. Do not use a comma to separate compound items joined by and. 2. Do not use a comma between a verb and its complement. 3. Do not use a comma between the subject and verb, except when two commas are necessary to mark nonrestrictive sentence elements. 4. Do not use a comma before prepositional phrases, subordinate conjunctions, or other modifiers-unless they are necessary for clarification.
