Poem: When I was fair and young, then favor graced me. Of many was I sought their mistriss for to be, But I did scorn them all and answered them therefore: Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more. How many weeping eyes I made to pine in woe, How many sighing hearts I have not skill to show, But I the prouder grew and still this spake therefore: Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more. Then spake fair Venus' son, that brave victorious boy, Saying: You dainty dame, for that you be so coy, I will so pluck your plumes as

Question: List the examples of important details the author chose to include. Explain how these details contribute to the emotional power of the piece.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, look at the adjectives

OpenStudy (anonymous):

try reading one line at a time. if there's a word you don't know, look it up. when you're reading a poem, it helps to think about the words the author chose and how they used them. like, " how many sighing hearts i have not skill to show". what do you think it means?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe the poem is about when she was fair and young, she was the subject of attention and everyone was interested in her but she always greeted the attention with scorn. So, i would guess that phrase's meaning is that she left a lot of broken hearts along the way and she didn't skills to make everyone happy? Not really sure what " i have not skill to show means"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

she didn't have the skills**

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you just answered your own question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the paragraph i just wrote is the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, is that exactly what you got out of it? if so, yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea, ok thanks then! Could you help me with one more pertaining to this same poem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

List the examples of important details the author chose to omit. Explain how these missing details contribute to the emotional power of the piece.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, while you were reading it, did you notice anything about it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know what she left out, she said how she felt and "sighing hearts" is how other people felt? maybe why she treated people with scorn is the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well honestly, i didn't really see scorn

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it was closer to arrogance... or selfishness

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I see what youre saying, i just said scorn because "But I did scorn them all and answered them therefore"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i guess there was some scorn, but i saw more arrogance and selfishness

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks :)
