effects of mercantilism and the Columbian Exchange EXPLANATION OF EFFECTS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

HI! I think I can help you, are you asking about the effects of mercantilism on America or on Europe? (Same with Columbian Exchange)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

both

Ok, so merchantilism was being practiced by the Europeans. This system has many points; the monarchy's duty was to increase wealth, and in those days wealth was bullion which you could get through trade or by building a colony. Colonies gave the mother country raw materials and provided a trading market, this system was highly centralized around the monarchy. Therefore, the Americas seemed like the perfect place to get bullion and increase wealth for the European Countries (so they made colonies). Is this what you are asking for? (I'm an AP United States History student, so this is kind of new to me too :)
