there's always two answers instead of one, because instead of just the positive solution you can always use a negative of equal magnitude and the abs will give you the same positive number.

in this case, 3 naturally works: 3 - 8 = -5 however ,-3 works equally well because of absolute brackets: |3| = 3 |-3| = 3
