What would be the most likely result of a direct democracy at the national level.

This would require a constituational amendment and the result would be chaos. The first consequence would be a hoard of regional candidates. Popular regional representatives would mount a campaign and it would be all but impossible to gain a national plurality. Would you have a minimum percentage of national votes in order to win or would you simply have the candidate with the most votes win? I think you would see a lot of demogogic (charismatic, popular,) rhetoric and that is usually scary because the race becomes one of :who talks the best and is most photographic not a race of issues. The most likely result of a direct democracy at the national lever would be the destruction of our republic, first by definition and second by intent of individual rights. This is an interesting question but one that would require a book to answer.
