I was born on December 31st 1996. I am 16 years old. I turn 17 this year on new years eve. My friend turns 16 on April 18th 2014. I am not sure what year he was born.

your friend was born  April 18, 1998   
because 2014 - 16 = 1998
(if your friend was 1 year old on April 18th 2014  you know he was born a year earlier, on April 18, 2013.... or if he  was 2 years old in 2014  he was born 2 years earlier on 2012... and so  on)

I was born on December 31st 1996
Friend born   April 18, 1998

If you were born on April 18 1997  (about 4 months later),  you would be 1 year older than your friend.   (You would be 1 year old on April 18, 1998)

now add in the few months from Jan to April  and 1 day for Dec 31 to Jan 1

we would count the exact number of days from Dec 31 to April 18
and you would be 1 year  and that many days older

oh okay. I was confused because of the dates. I told him that we were only about 4 months apart and he said, "oh yeah we are." so I guess we were both confused. Ugh I hate math lol
