Is the relation a function? {(14, 15), (5, 7), (3, 10), (11, 1), (5, 8)}

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

see if any x value is repeated. if x value is repeated, then its NOT a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x comes before y right?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yup !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So since there are two 5s then it wont be a function? right?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Perfect !! since 5 gives u two y values, 7 and 8, its not a function. its just a relation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah, I get now. Makes sense too. Thank you for helping :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

for every input, a function gives u exactly 1 output value. observe that here, if we put 5, we can get 2 output values - ambiguous. so not fit for a function.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

np :)
