Did you try tossing in some print statements to see what results you are getting?

Yes, they all check out when I'm testing is_valid_word directly but don't even show when I run it through the test.

I have done some searching and many people had an issue where they needed to close and reopen idle to get it to load their msot recent stuff properly for the testing.
