Factor: (x-y)^2+3(x-y)-10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x-y+5)(x-y-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you use some sort of operation or formula? i'm a bit lost in that part.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First thing i rearranged the formula to x^2-2xy+y^2+3x-3y-10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the first thing i do is look at the first number. What do have have to times together to get the x^2 Then i look at the last number and realize I have to multiply 5 and 2 to get 10 and one of them have to be negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

At this point I have (x+#+5)(x+#-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, and that was where i got stuck. i didn't know how to even go about filling in the rest.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Notice the center term is a y^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it has to be y and y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then its just a matter of figuring out the correct signs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thank you so much!
