Round the number to the given place value. 24.617; hundredths A. 24.61 B. 24.62 C. 24.65 D. 24.67

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It can't be A or C... or D, so process of elimination is B. That wasn't so hard.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not good with different place values but A is NOT correct because it says "24.61" which--- well, I take it back. I think I'm reading it wrong and it could be A. B is NOT it because anything below 4 rounds back to a 1 or stays the same so it'd be 24.61, not 62. C is NOT it because 24.65... how do they even get that? The 1 stays a 1 and the 7 makes an 8. D is the same as C

So A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its not b?

I found someone posted the same question but the answer was deleted. A makes more Sense than B so A

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You need to round to the nearest 100th. First find the digit in the hundredths polace. 24.617 ^ The digit 1 is in the hundredths place. That means everything to the right of the 1 will be gone. Now you need to decide what to do with the digit 1. The rule is that if the digit after 1 is 5 or larger, change the 1 to a 2. If the digit after the 1 is 4 or less, the 1 remains as 1. In this case, the digit after the 1 is 7, which is greater than 5, so the 1 becomes a 2. The final answer is 24.62

That's what I was thinking when I thought it was B. So maybe I was right the first time

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

B is the correct answer.
