In what way did the Byzantine Empire constitute a continuation of the Roman Empire?

Mostly through its continuation of the kind of government and the laws it inherited from Rome. The Byzantine Empire was the eastern half of the Roman Empire and when the West collapsed, it was the only half of the old "Roman" empire that continued to prosper for another thousand or so years.
