Find the maximum or minimum of the following quadratic function: y = -2x2 + 4x - 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. -1 B. 0 C. 1 D. 4

OpenStudy (raden):

one of way, use the formula : y_max = -(b^2 - 4ac)/(4a) according the equation above, known : a=-2, b=4, and c=-1 it is maximum, because the value of coefficient of x^2 < 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its D

OpenStudy (raden):

just guessing, right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no never mind its C i just did the problem and i got 1

OpenStudy (raden):

y_max = -(b^2 - 4ac)/(4a) = -(4^2 - 4(-2)(-1))/(4*-2) = -8/-8 = 1 you are right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you :)
