a rectangle has area 60m^2. express the perimeter of the rectangle as a function of its width.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

whats the formula for the area of a rectangle..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Area = Length X Width

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

great so A = lw you know A so 60 = lw the question is asking you to make w the subject

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

perimeter = 2W + 2L

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well if 60 = lw divide both sides of the equation by w what do you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60/w=L

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

great now substitute it into the perimeter formula for L

OpenStudy (anonymous):

perimeter=2w+2(60/w)

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

yes... and it can be simplified to P = 2w + 120/w

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this the answer?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

I think so.... how do you feel about it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think is fine Thank you :)

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

glad to help
