If row 1 of my matrix in reduced row echelon form is [1 0 0 0] and row 2 is [0 1 0 0] is there a free variable? The original matrix is an augmented matrix.Thanks so much!

I think you are talking about Ax=b where A is augmented by the addition of b as a column, If that A is mxn and 2<n then yes, there is a free variable
