Can somebody help me name this Cycloalkane ??? http://www.sciencegeek.net/APchemistry/APtaters/graphics/cycloalkane/ca13.gif <-- This is a previous question from another. The answer given said it's symmetrical so it doesn't matter but on carbon 1 there is a propyl and a ethyl where the other (carbon 3) is two propyl. How does this affect the numbering of the carbons?
1-ethyl-1,3,3-tripropylcyclobutane
Symmetric in the sense that numbering would be the same and really doesnt matter which way you named it. You could of started said 3-ethyl-1,1,3-tripropylcyclobutane.
You can start from either side, numbering is the same. And according to IUPAC it states, you want to name according to lowest numbering. In this cas,e numbering is same for both.
