on the right you can cancel the z's... z alone is known as z^1 but the one is rarely written.

on the left you have 2 z's in the numerator and a z in the denominator. you can write it as zz/z to help you cancel a z out or if you know the exponent rules, it's z^2-1 and that's z^1 a.k.a z
