Why did earlier historians consider the Medieval Period the "Dark Ages"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because of the scarcity of artistic and cultural output as well as the fact that this time period symbolized the fall of the Roman Empire. During the time there were not as many intellectual or artistic achievements as some of the previous ages hence early historians considered it a time of intellectual and artistic "darkness" as opposed to previous ages filled with many new obvious achievements Modern historians have now seen the significance of the "Dark Ages" and no longer refer to it as such. Instead we now use the term the "Middle Ages"

The correct answer is 'the era seemed less important than the Renaissance and the Roman Empire.'
