@Dobby1

OpenStudy (dobby1):

because of the absolute value sign we end up with an equation that looks like this \[-3\le x-5\le3\]

OpenStudy (dobby1):

now all you have to do is get rid of the 5 since it is x - 5 the 5 is negative so what do we do to get rid of it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add it to both sides? The answer is also in a number line.

OpenStudy (dobby1):

yes add it to each side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2<x-0<3

OpenStudy (dobby1):

not negative 2 because we added the five to get rid of it so we added a positive 5 to each side giving us \[2\le x \le8\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok.

OpenStudy (dobby1):

we add 5 to every side not just the first and second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (dobby1):

that is what we do every time we have an equation like this

OpenStudy (dobby1):

can I have a medal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how does that look on a number line though?

OpenStudy (dobby1):

it looks like a closed dot on 2 with a line all the way to a closed dot at 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, one more question?

OpenStudy (dobby1):

because of the absolute value sign we get an equation that looks like -26<2x+10<26

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.

OpenStudy (dobby1):

the first step is to get rid of the 10 since it is a positive 10 we subtract 10 from each of the sides. remember to subtract 10 from every side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-36<2x+0<16

OpenStudy (dobby1):

or -36<2x<16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.

OpenStudy (dobby1):

now divide 2 from each side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-18<2x<8

OpenStudy (dobby1):

18<x<8 dividing each side by 2 gets rid of the 2 in 2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.

OpenStudy (dobby1):

-18<x<8

OpenStudy (dobby1):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you.
