how many kilograms of pure alcohol must be added to 40kg of 70% alcohol solution to produce an 85% alcohol solution? can you help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let x = # kg of pure alcohol the solution will be made up of 40 kg of 70% solution and x kg of 100% solution (pure alcohol) and it will create 40+x kg of 85% solution. Just translate the mess I wrote above to an equation representing the amount of alcohol present in each component: .70(40) + 1(x) = .85(40+x) 28 + x = 34 + .85x 6 = .15x x = 40 kg
