If I have the points (-1,-8) ; How do I write the equation of the vertical line passing through it ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

vertical line :- x = k

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

since the point has a x-coordinate of -1, the equation wud be ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know what a vertical line is -_- I need to know how to write the EQUATION for the GIVEN POINTS .

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Yes :) just we look at the x-coordinate of give point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1 .

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

since the point has a x-coordinate of -1, the equation wud be \(x = -1\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So that's it . My answer for this question : Write the equation of the horizontal line passing through the point (-`,-8) is x= -1 ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yup !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if I had this same question , but with different points & it asked for a vertical line , it would by y= ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if i had (3,1) it would be y=1 ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

vertical line is always like below :- x = somthing

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

vertical line passing thru (3, 1) wud be x = 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but x is for horizontal lines .. ?:I

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats a very good question :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it has to be in slope intercept form .. y=mx+b or something .

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

tell me this, wats the equation of y-axis ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dunno . I'm not in school & I dont have anyone teaching this stuff to me .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im probably making you angry . :c

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

its okay, since now im here, lets discuss this and get some clarity on vertical/horizontal lines :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

its easy to see that, on y axis all points have x = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mhm ..
