How does tolerance put a drug user at high risk for an overdose

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well it depends on the drug. and what you consider a "drug"... but lets say you snort cocaine.. if you build up a tolerance for that particular drug, where the maximum amout you can snort in one sitting, doesnt really have an affect on you, you will want to snort more, not realizing the effect it is having on your body, there fore, resulting in an overdose..

the maximum amount being the amount of the drug you can "safely" intake without overdosing, thus resulting in dying

Tessa is correct, You think you've built up an immunity, when in reality you've just built up a tolerance, so you intake more of the drug, until you exceed the "safe" zone, and have a cardiac arrest, your heart and lungs stop causing you to lose consciousness and die. :(
