2x-1=11

OpenStudy (ja1):

We need to isolate the variable, do you know how to start it off?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no\[2x-1=11\]

OpenStudy (ja1):

Well first of all if we want to isolate the variable we need to first isolate , so to do this we need to get rid of that -1, do you know what inverse operation is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (ja1):

Well basically it's the opposite of the operation, for example - (Subtraction) is the inverse of + (Addition) and * (Multiplication) is the opposite of / (Division) so if we want to get rid of the -1 that is a subtraction probelm what is the inverse operation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got the answer the answer is x=13

OpenStudy (ja1):

Not quite...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x= 10 or 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the answer right

OpenStudy (ja1):

Neither, you need to isolate the variable which you have not done (or at least your math doesn't support that you did)

OpenStudy (ja1):

No, remember you need to follow the steps I am outlining, do the inverse operation and the rest is a breeze.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-10 is the answer

OpenStudy (ja1):

Again, no, instead of shooting off answers let's work through it together, once you get it down once you will understand it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you tell me what to do

OpenStudy (ja1):

I a trying :) like I said before, we need 2x by itself, and so we need to get rid of -1, to do this we need to do the inverse operation, do you know what it is in this case?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope i don't

OpenStudy (ja1):

well as I outlined above, inverse is the opposite of subtraction which is.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you give me the answer

OpenStudy (ja1):

To save you the trouble of me going into a rambling about how it is against our Code of Conduct and our terms of use to do so, I will simply ask you one thing, what will me giving you the answer help you with?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to get my homework done faster

OpenStudy (ja1):

Yupp, and maybe even Ace it right? Yah that seems nice, but wait, what about when that darn test comes? Oh that's right, you don't kow the material because you cheated on it and didn't want to learn it, now I have to go now, I like helping people learn not cheat through life.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where are you going?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x-1=11 So in order to get x by itself you have to get rid of the -1 by +1 so +1 +1 Then you get 2x = 10 So now, how do you get rid of the 2 in 2x?
