Connie has saved up $15 to purchase a new CD from the local store. The sales tax in her county is 5% of the sticker price. Write an equation and solve it to determine the value of the highest priced CD Connie can purchase with her $15, including the sales tax. Round your answer to the nearest penny. x + 0.05x = 15; x = $14.29 x - 0.05x = 15; x = $15.79 0.5x = 15; x = $30 5x = 15; x = $3.00

OpenStudy (debbieg):

If x is the price of the CD, then what is an expression for the total amount that Connie will pay, once tax is added?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.05x?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

That is the amount of the tax, so that's important! Now, you have that the price of the CD is x. The amount of tax that she will pay is 0.05x. So: what's the TOTAL amount that she pays for the CD, including the tax?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x + 0.05x?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

yes, exactly. So, to "determine the value of the highest priced CD Connie can purchase with her $15, including the sales tax", you would set that = 15, right? Then whatever you get for x when you solve that equation, is the price of a CD that would cost her ALL of her money.

So i think its A right?

OpenStudy (debbieg):

right. :)
