what is the graph of the absolute value equation? y =|x + 3 | - 4
A
Here are the options.
You really just did that Nasumimelon? Douchebag.
What are you talking about?
The response from nasumimelon, blatantly giving you the answer; he/she is a moron.
I apologize, i was helping he or she with a similar problem early and I explained how to read absolute value graphs. However, calling me a moron is very rude.
Giving the answer even (especially) if it's a similar problem does not particularly support your argument.
So is the answer A ?
The answer is A because when you are the value inside the absolute value determines if the graph moves left or right if positive or negative like i mention earlier
The value outside of the equation determines if the graph move sup or down. If it is positive then it moves up, and vice versa
Thanks for the help. Just need 2 more and I'm done.
A good way of looking at functions involving absolute values is to divide it up to different cases, remember that the absolute value operator can never be less than 0.
What is the graph of the absolute value equation? y = 1 over 2 |x|
What are your thoughts?
Let me post the pics and ill tell you
those are the options
Instead of looking at the options, try to think of how your function is going to behave simply from how absolute values are defined.
ok nasimelon can you help also
Yes, lets determine one part at a time. Is the graph positive or negative? (the sign before the absolute value |x|)
ok
Is there a negative sign or nothing? (which means positive)
negative
Double check again, \[y=1/2|x|\] the value before the absolute value is 1/2. Is 1/2 positive or negative? Remember that number below 0 are negative. Fractions can be positive.
If the value is postive, then the graph opens up (the V is this way and not ^) which helps you eliminate two answer chouces
ok
Next the value before the graph determines how wide the graph opens. A simple thing you can do is plug in values and plot. For example, when you plug in 2 you get 1 which is your y value. (The absolute value of 2 is 2. (1/2) times 2 is 1) Now you you plug in a few x and see what the Y are, match them up with the graph and youll have your answer
Bro i suck at math i cant even figure that out lol
Haha it's okie we'll figure it out together. When a the value before an absolute value is less (1/2 is less then example 1) then you know the graph will open up wider. The graph in A is wider than B. Also plug in X= 6, you get 3 which is Y. if you look at graph A those points match up.
is it c
You got it (: Please remember that these are the basic equations dealing with absolute values. Try learning how to read them and itll be a piece of cake from there on.
Thanks i need 1 more question and im done can you help.
What is the absolute value function?
Last one
Step one: Is the graph positive or negative? (is the graph opening upward V or downward ^?)
downward
Choices
So you know the graph is negative. So far you know this. y = -|x| okie? Step two: determine the width of the graph. Since all the answer choice has 7 its safe to assume its 7. The graph is narrower than normal (1). Step three: Did the graph move left or right? If it moved left then the value inside the absolute value is positive (y=-7|x+8|) If the graph moved right then the value inside is negative (y=-7|x-8|) Which one if it? -8 or +8?
+8 ?
Lastly: To determine if he graph moved up or down. You can see that the vertex (point of the ^) is touching -4. This is determines the value outside of y=-7|x+8| ?. Simply plug it in and you'll get y= -7|x+8| -4. And there you go! Hope that you have a better understanding in absolute values !
so its C yea
Thanks for your help i fan you and medal
