What is the difference between y2 and y²?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2Y (same as y2) means the value of y multiplied by 2. \[y^2\] means the value of y multiplied by itself. Example: y = 3 2y = 6 \[y^{2}\] = 9

OpenStudy (abb0t):

2(2) vs (2)\(^2\) which is actually (2\(\times\)2)
