I was writing a diary entry from a character's point of view, and my teacher commented that the "voice is not always evident". What exactly is a voice in writing??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The writer's voice is the individual writing style of an author. A combination of idiotypical usage of syntax, diction, punctuation, character development, dialogue and more..

By your definition, every writer has their voice. So what did my teacher mean when she commented "voice is not always evident"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It could mean that the voice or style of writing you were using didn't seem in character, or that it was consistent. hope that helps
